چکیده

The transferrins are a group of iron-binding glucoproteins migrating in the 3-globulin region on starch gel electrophoresis (Smithies and Hiller, i959). Commonly, there is a single iron-binding band called transferrin C, but faster (B variants) and slower (D variants) migrating bands are occasionally present. They are termed in order of electrophoretic mobility towards the anode Bo, Bo-i, B1, B1-2, B2, B3, C, Do, D4, D1, D2, and D3 (Bearn and Parker, I964). Family studies have indicated that the different transferrins are genetically controlled by a number of autosomal genes (Smithies, I958; Parker and Bearn, I962; Arends, Gallango, Parker, and Bearn, I962; Lai, I963; Glen-Bott, Harris, Robson, Beam, and Parker, I964). Individuals with two transferrin bands, i.e. B1C, are heterozygous for the genes controlling the B1 and C variants, while individuals with one transferrin band only are homozygous for the corresponding gene. The phenotype B2C occurs with a frequency of around i %O in Caucasian populations (Beam and Parker, I964). The phenotype Bo-iC with a frequency of 8% in Navajo Indians (Parker and Bean, i96ia), the phenotype D1C with a frequency of I22% among Negro populations (Neel, Robinson, Zuelzer, Livingstone and Sutton, i96i; Allison and Barnicot, ig60), and the phenotype DchiC with a frequency of 6%o among Chinese (Parker and Bearn, i96ib; Kirk and Lai, i96i). The remaining phenotypes appear to be rather rare. This paper reports the frequency of transferrin variants in Greeks.

Physiological significance of the marked increased branching of the glycans of human serotransferrin during pregnancy.

Human serotransferrin (Tf) presents a microheterogeneity based on the existence of biantennary and triantennary glycans of the N-acetyl-lactosaminic type. By affinity chromatography on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column in well-defined conditions, human serotransferrin isolated from healthy donors was resolved into three carbohydrate molecular variants: Tf-I (less than 1%), Tf-II (17 +/- 2%) and...

The effect of transferrin polymorphisms on iron metabolism.

The effect of five different transferrin variants (TFv1, TFv2, TFv3, TFv4, and TFv5) on the hemoglobin level, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), ferritin level, percent transferrin saturation (%TS), and the unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) was investigated in subjects with defined HFE haplotypes, 919 persons undergoing health screening and 113 patients with clinical hemochromatosis. The mos...

Pathogenic neisseriae can use hemoglobin, transferrin, and lactoferrin independently of the tonB locus.

Redundant TonB systems which function in iron transport from TonB-dependent ligands have recently been identified in several gram-negative bacteria. We demonstrate here that in addition to the previously described tonB locus, an alternative system exists for the utilization of iron from hemoglobin, transferrin, or lactoferrin in Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Following incuba...

TMPRSS6, but not TF, TFR2 or BMP2 variants are associated with increased risk of iron-deficiency anemia.

A variety of conditions lead to anemia, which affects one-quarter of the world's population. Previous genome-wide association studies revealed a number of genetic polymorphisms significantly associated with plasma iron status. To evaluate the association of genetic variants in genes involved in iron delivery and hepcidin regulation pathways with the risk of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), the fol...

Allelic D variants of transferrin in evaluation of alcohol abuse: differential diagnosis by isoelectric focusing-immunoblotting-laser densitometry.

In the diagnosis of alcohol abuse transferrin (Tf) allelic D variants generate false-positive test results for carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) as assessed by their electrophoretic migration patterns. The predominant Tf C1 allele encodes a protein for which the most prevalent isoform has a pI of 5.4, i.e., four sialic acids and two bound ion molecules. Carriers of allele D encode Tfs wi...
